Collings CW: Years ago, when Mr. Collings burst upon the scene making extra fine acoustic guitars with his name on the headstock (he had previously made instruments under the name of a famous Nashville guitar shop), there was a model he produced that was only available at Baldy Brothers guitars in Austin. Now, this same guitar is available at many fine Collings dealers throughout the country as the model CW. There is some speculation as to whether the CW indicates a "Country/Western" model or designates it as the "Collings Winfield" to commemorate Collings participation in that famous musical festival for many years (AKA the Walnut Valley Festival). Or, does it pay homage to a certain legendary guitar player whose initials were C.W. ? These facts are in evidence: (1) It is a fabulous guitar, with raw power and rich tonality, with a sound that those who favor using small sections of the shell of the land tortoise can wholly appreciate. (2) it has a bound fingerboard, quite similar to the guitar of the aforementioned legendary picker, and (3) It has the larger than normal soundhole which appears on other guitars designed in homage to that same player. This feature of course, produced more projection, especially in the mid-range, and improves the listening experience for both player and audience. Whatever the title one places on the instrument, it still does not do justice to the quality of both sound and playability found within. You might just want to experience it for your self.
